Toxic warnings for nano industry
fishboyAi

ME; ) recent coverage of the European Nano Trade Alliance conference has been limmited but visible. under discussion is the impact assessment of these technology's. for quite a while there has been a growing trend toward self regulation within the industry. this must be respected but obviously does not go as far as those who do not profit directly from it and may yet suffer because of it may hope it would.

Blowing Up A Gale
antizac

Australian Model Megan Gale is promoting a nanotech product. Invisible Zinc is being promoted as a healthly, reduced chemical form of sunscreen/moisturiser to be applied liberally in the land of gaping ozone depletion. Just like the fallacy that good genes will preserve us from a toxic environment, this PR switcheroo would have us believe nanotech is the discerning woman's (or person-of-the-year's for that matter) weapon of choice in the face of increasing environmental degradation. That this new zinc product comes from a state and country dominated by powerful mining interests goes without saying. Gale appears this month on the cover of monthly Australian housewive's magazine "Woman's Weekly" dressed as a christmas angel. (It seems THRONG may have a heavenly battle on their hands.) Melbourne recently hosted (9-11th of December) a $600-a-head nanotechnology (and convergent technologies) commercialisation conference, this hot on the heels of national science research body CSIRO's 'nanotechnology "scoping" project' which purported to be the first stage of a public consultation process. One smells a PR rat though, given how behind the 8-ball the initiation of such a process was, with the nanotech commercialisation conference occuring a couple of days later and a host of nanotech products already on the market. (Northern Australia is home to a 'nanotechnology house' project, associated with QLD universities. [QLD is positioning itself as a bastion of new technologies like biotech and nanotech.) The CSIRO has been heavily involved in the promotion of agricultural biotechnology in Australia and while it purports to be a public institution, has clear conflicts of interest extending from industry-centered funding arrangements and a mandate to rush through commercialisation of R&D. 'Outdoors' and 'Adventure' clothing company Kathmandu is also a big retailer of nanotech in Australia, with around 2/3 of their product range incorporating nanotech textiles and the like. It is worth noting that in both instances ( zinc cream and clothing ) the products in question are coming in direct contact with the skin, begging questions of novel toxicology, abrasion, inhalation etcetera. Merry X-mass.

Over with Minatec (before it starts)
The occupiers of Minatec's building site

Since 8 o'clock this monday december 13th, a group is occupying a Minatec's building
site's crane, in order to interrupt the construction for a day (two banners have been tied: "we stop everything" and "nanotechs = giga-control"). The
occupiers, supported by demonstrators on the ground, have unrolled a
banner against nanotechnologies (« here the industry of
totalitarianism »)
and distributed some tracts to the passers-by, calling them to join them
fast.

GM WEEKLY WATCH number 100
GM Watch

from Claire Robinson, WEEKLY WATCH editor

Dear all

In the week in which the powerful World Conservation Union called for a global moratorium on GMO releases, the industry continues to retreat from hotspots of resistance. Bayer has given up on Britain, withdrawing its last GM seeds from the approval process (see EUROPE), and GM pharm company Ventria has fled California, taking refuge in Missouri (see BAD-IDEA VIRUS LATEST). Even in China, which is somewhat insulated from the battles raging in the rest of the world, there seem to be qualms about forging ahead with genetically modifying its staple crop, rice. (ASIA)

In Germany, meanwhile, the industry is engaging in a masterly exercise in doublethink. Monsanto is using German research (non peer-reviewed, of course!) which claims to show there's no danger of GM farmers contaminating non-GM crops, to support their opposition to a proposed new German law under which GM farmers would be held liable for contaminating non-GM crops (EUROPE). In other words, Monsanto is yet again claiming GM to be perfectly safe while desperately opposing any liability for damages! Let's hope the German government maintains its generally strong capacity for logic and doesn't get bamboozled by this scam.

Please don't miss an important CAMPAIGN OF THE WEEK, and do forward the details to all your contacts. The action only takes a minute.

The Invisible U.S. Military Offensives in Weather Weaponry
snow

To gain further insight into the mental illness of our leaders, and the irresponsible, catastrophic direction in which they have thrust us, consider the ongoing research, development and applications of weather warfare technologies. Adherents of weather warfare prefer to call it “environmental modification techniques” – or ENMOD. The corporate media has reported almost nothing about these aerospace and defense programs, or the technologies involved. Thus do I open the discussion of the ENMOD arena by deconstructing recent news stories. 2002

Sigilosa reunión de 26 gobiernos sobre nanotecnología
geek

ETC Group
