Bacolod City, PHILIPPINES — Around 400 farmers and members of church and civic groups trooped today to the Negros Occidental provincial capitol to press members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) to uphold Provincial Ordinance 007, which bans the entry of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and secure the future of Negros as the organic farming capital of the Philippines.

Alert: Stop Release of 1st Temperate GE Tree (Plum)
The US Department of Agriculture is accepting public comments between now and July 17, 2006 on a petition that would allow commercial growing and marketing of the first genetically engineered (GE) plum trees. If approved, this would remove all regulatory oversight of this GE variety, a virus-resistant plum tree known as the Honey Sweet Pox Potyvirus Resistant plum. This would open the door to GE varieties of many other related stone fruits, such as peaches, apricots, cherries and almonds, that are susceptible to the same virus. Ironically, this virus is not even found in the US today according to the USDA, and is certainly not a significant agricultural problem here.

Am 17. April, dem internationalen Tag der Landlosen, nahmen Menschen an über 50 Aktionen in 25 verschiedenen Ländern teil. Eine davon fand vor dem Hauptsitz des Schweizer Agrarkonzerns «Syngenta» in Basel statt. Hauptanlass dazu war die Ermordung eines Landlosen in Brasilien im Bundesstaat Paraná, durch eine von Syngenta beauftragte Sicherheitsfirma.

Van 31 Augustus tot 2 September wordt onder de cynische naam 'Round Table on Responsible Soy' door NGOs en bedrijfsleven gepraat over de aan de sojateelt gerelateerde problemen. Het uitgangspunt van de betrokken bedrijven is toch vooral om door te gaan met de huidige productie van soja en het areaal liefst nog te vergroten. Daarom is er een tegentop en zijn er acties.
