NZ Blocks Agreement on Accurate Labelling of LMOs
At the recent MOP-2 (2nd meeting of Parties to the Cartagena Protocol) in Montreal earlier this month, NZ blocked an agreement by over 100 countries that would have ensured accurate labelling of GE (LMO) content of food exports.

Following two weeks of long and intense negociations, the final plenary of the seventh Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity arrived. The plenary was considerably delayed due to extended meetings and only commenced very late in the evening, yet the text was ready for final adoption by the participating parties.
Labelling - according to the US and Canada
Documentation of text used the trilateral agreement between USA, Canda and Mexico in a model agreement for the implementation of Article 18.2(a) on the transbaoundary movement of living modified organisms intended for food, feed, and processing (LMO-FFPs).
"This may contain GMOs..."
The USA, Canada and Mexico made a trilateral agreement on the labelling of GMOs that sounds like a joke, but meant seriously. Regarding the the transboundary movement of GMOs for food, feed and processing (LMO-FFPs), they agreed on documentation to label GMO shipments with a "may contain" statement that does not include any information which GMO it is. No labelling what so ever is needed if the GMO content is less then 5%, or for any unintended GM-contamination, no matter how high that is.

A top-ranking regional officer fo Syngenta, the agrochemical and seed giant, is part of the official delegation of the Philipines in the MOP, the First Meeting of Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Bisafety.

As before, the Miami group around the USA, Canada and Argentina can easily made out as the bad guys, together with industry organisations like the International Grain Trade Coallition, but some proposals around labelling are just ridiculous.
