People's Caravan For Food Sovereignty Sweeps through Asia
Hundreds of peasant organizations and support NGOs, representing millions of poor Asian farmers, are currently participating in the People’s Caravan 2004 for People’s Food Sovereignty that is sweeping through 15 countries across Asia and Europe. After a first caravan in 2000, this year's caravan bears the theme "Asserting Our Rights to Land and Food" and will culminate in Nepal with a public rally and the Conference on Alternatives to Globalization on September 30. PC2004 aims to raise awareness on the issues involved in food sovereignty, including the World Trade Organization (WTO), genetic engineering (GE), pesticides, agrochemical transnational corporations (TNCs), workers' rights, and the promotion of sustainable agriculture. Drums, specially written songs, an exhibition of seeds saved by farmers, and pots of medicinal plants and local food crops highlighted an exuberant kick-off to the People’s Caravan events in Chennai, Tamil Nadu (India).
As part of the People’s Caravan for Food Sovereignty in Kunming, China, a team of “investigative researchers” who comprising PAN AP (Pesticide Action Network) and PEAC (Pesticide Eco-Alternative Center Yunnan Thoughtful Action) staff, NGO representatives, academicians and students, made a half-day trip to China’s Dianchi Lake, to witness first-hand how the lake, which was once jade-clear and plentiful, has now turned into a dirty and polluted water front.
The Caravan in Mongolia started on September 5 at 10 a.m. with a People’s Rally, organised by the local Centre for Human Rights and Development (CHRD), in order to raise awareness of the public on the issues of food sovereignty.

Teilgenommen haben neben div. KölnerInnen und Landwirten aus der Umgebung auch die Trägerin des alternativen Nobelpreises, Vandana Shiva aus Indien und RednerInnen aus Malaysia, den Phillipinen, Österreich, Afrika, Belgien und aus ganz Deutschland.

East and South-East Asia leg kicks off in Hong Kong
Jeasudas, 34, is a fisherman from Pitipana in Negombo District in the North Western part of Sri Lanka. While he has been a fishermen for the last 13 years, Jeasudas does not own his own boat but rents a simple fishing boat from his brother-in-law that boasts an out-board motor. These boats are in high demand as they enable fisherman like Jeasudas to go further out to sea than the traditional boats used by previous generations of fisherfolk in his community.
September 3, the Peoples’ Caravan reached Monaragala in Sri Lanka, approximately 300 km away from Colombo. The Caravan was met by 800 people; the majority of whom were women, some of them who travelled long distances to join the event.

The recent parliamentary debate on amendments to the 1974 Malaysian Pesticide Act had sadly missed one salient point – the adverse effects that poisons used on plantations and farms have on human beings.
To avoid these problems Syngenta must be stopped from producing paraquat to feed the global marketplace, and the only way to do this is to make the TNC accountable for its action on millions of farmers and workers affected by its product.
