Share biodiversity at the First Annual NWRAGE Seed, Plant, and Herb Swap
22-11-2002

From the open publishing newswire: Since agriculture began farmers have saved and swapped their seeds with other farmers increasing the varieties they grow and preserving and increasing biodiversity by mixing seeds grown in different locales. To this day over a billion farmers continue to save their own seed and swap it with others. This cooperation is under direct threat from the Biotechnology industry as they try to homogenize, and control world agriculture through Terminator technology (sterile seeds) and making the saving of seeds illegal. Come join local gardeners, farmers, herbalists, and others as we continue this ancient practice and trade seeds and plants we have grown and collected, swap stories, watch a movie and eat wonderful GE-free food.

What to bring: open pollinated seeds, plants - herbs or vegies or flowers, GE-Free potluck dish and your own utensils, empty seed packets or envelopes - we will make envelopes at the swap as well. Bring your friends. You do not have to have seeds to share to participate. Information will be provided on: seed saving, organic open pollinated seed sources (including the federal governments free seeds from the national germplasm system), doing your own breeding and what you can do to preserve biodiversity and prevent the intrusion of genetic engineering into our lives and ecosystems.

When: Sunday December 1st from 2-6pm. [ Read More... ]

Anti-oppression consumerism?
31-10-2002

From the open publishing newswire: How can we purchase the things we need without contributing to oppression and poverty the world around? OK... it's clear that reducing the demand for oil is a good start, and that at least protesting the oppressive policies of our government and corporations is beneficial as well. But how can we shop?

Monsanto will be supported when we buy products made with GMO corn, which we may not have to if the Oregon vote comes out favourably... but that's just food. What do we do about clothing, and electronics, and other items that we decorate our homes and bodies with?

Is there a list of the socially and environmentally conscientious manufacturers? I really worry that when I buy my next pair of shoes I'll be helping perpetuate the starvation of some third world kid. And what about my pants and shirts and kitchen appliances and stuff? It's tough to do the right thing when the very fabric of our society is built upon the oppression of others.

Safeway CEO, Steven Burd, marries Betty the Biotech Corn in Portland today
31-10-2002

From the open publishing newswire: A national campaign to rid grocery stores of Genetically Engineered (GE) foods hit a peak today when hundreds of consumers throughout the United States and Canada joined the GE-Free Markets Coalition and protested at their local supermarkets, demanding these risky ingredients be removed. NW Resistance Against Genetic Engineering (NW RAGE), as members of the GE-Free Markets Coalition, are demanding that Safeway remove untested GE ingredients from its store brand products. Today’s rally featured a mock wedding with Betty the Biotech Corn and Steven Burd the CEO of Safeway. The group says it will continue to pressure supermarkets around the country until they commit to going "GE-free".

"We're calling on Safeway to listen to their customers and do the right thing by removing genetically engineered ingredients from their store brand products," said Mark Des Marets, "Whole Foods, Wild Oats and Trader Joe’s did it – Safeway can do it, too." [ Read More... ]

Sadly bewildered, we are gathered here today, in the name of obscene profits and genetic engineering, to join Betty the Biotech corn and Safeway the Grocery Conglomerate in unholy matrimony...

I, Safeway, take thee Betty to be my lawfull wedded product. To stock and to sell, for richer and even richer. Inspite of sickness, disease, or other genetic side effects. I promise to provide an ample supply of unwitting consumers, to put profit over people, and to sell, sell, sell from this day forward for as long as your customers may live

Honk and say 'YES' to measure 27!
28-10-2002

From the open publishing newswire: Are you feeling down about the 6 million dollars spent to cloud the initiative to label genetically engineered foods? Upset that "no on 27" ads run about every 15 minutes during prime time tv? Why not take that out to the street?

I spent two hours today with a HONK! sign and was re-energized with the response. People really don't want this franken-crap. Standing on the corner encouraging them to vote yes helps remind them of this. It also helps short-circuit the evil-doers "no on 27" PR campaign. Wanna try? Here's how... [ Read More... ]

Measure 27 Can Make US Less 'Crazy'
26-10-2002

From the open publishing newswire: We can enact positive change only if people's brains are functioning fully. The food we eat enhances or detracts from our brain's ability to function. Allergies are more common today than ever. Many companies that play the biotech game are related to producing drugs that relieve the symptoms of allergies. Connect the dots and support Measure 27.

A few years back, Carol Simontacchi chronicled the way in which American's screw up their mental health by eating a nutrient-poor foods. Her research led her to the conclusion that the combination of artificial ingredients and lack of minerals were linked to many problems, including allergies and ADHD. As I've read this book to an at-risk population, namely my 5th grade class, I've had a revelation: We'll never get our country moving towards positive change until more are feeding their brains. Measure 27 may be the best way to start that process.

The biggest point Carol seems to make is that kid's, as well as adult's, brains, are functioning poorly because of their diets. [ Read More... ]

Promote Responsible Agriculture and Consumer Protection: Vote YES on 27!
24-10-2002

From the open publishing newswire: Please get the word out about measure 27 which would require the labeling of genetically engineered foods if passed. Vote YES on 27 for CONSUMER RIGHTS! Vote YES on 27 for FAMILY FARMS! Vote YES on 27 for ECOLOGICAL RESPONSIBILITY! Vote YES on 27 for HEALTH AWARENESS! Stand by the truth!

More than 4 million dollars worth of advertising propoganda is being pushed in Oregon to mislead Oregonians into voting no on measure 27. I say it is 'propoganda' designed to 'mislead' because the arguments posited in said campaign are fallacious and skirt the fundamental issue of consumer's rights to know what they are purchasing.

Two fallacious primary arguments currently being propogandized are that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are no different in effect from traditionally bred organisms and that voting yes on 27 would have a negative effect on the economic well-being of local farmers and the public in general. Give Oregonians a Choice for Safer Foods
17-10-2002

From the open publishing newswire: The mandated labeling of genetically engineered foods in Oregon has become a crucial national issue. If Oregonians succeed in passing Measure 27, we will be setting a precedent, one that Monsanto does not want to see. The coalition of heavyweight biotech companies called CropLife International, in conjunction with brand name producers such as PepsiCo, General Mills, and ConAgra Foods, has committed $6 million to defeat it, contracting with the prestigious Portland firm Conklin, Fiskum, and McCormick for media and public relations work, according to OÂ’DwyerÂ’s PR Daily.

WeÂ’ve already seeing the results in glossy brochures, mailers, and television ads thick with misinformation put forth by hired "experts." Chief among the arguments we are hearing from the opponents, who call themselves the Coalition Against the Co$tly Labeling Law, are the grossly over-estimated projected costs, partly because they insist the measure will include food servers such as restaurants. Proponents of the measure point out that the terms "food service" or "food server" are not mentioned in the measure, and that major food retailers in the European Union (including Safeway) have reported no significant increase in consumer food costs because labeling of genetically engineered foods is required there. Thirty-five nations, with half the worldÂ’s population, either require labeling of GE foods or ban them outright. [ Read More... ]
