WEEKLY WATCH number 111
------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------
from Claire Robinson, WEEKLY WATCH editor
------------------------------------------------------------

Dear all:

Tony Hall, the U.S. ambassador to the FAO, has renewed his call for African leaders who refuse the U.S.'s GM-contaminated food aid to be tried for "crimes against humanity". It appears to be part of a viral marketing strategy aimed at painting the U.S. and biotech as the saviours of Africa and those that raise concerns as genocidal villains. And lobbyists like CS Prakash and Willie DeGreef have been joining in the chorus. (LOBBYWATCH)

The most important piece of news this week is the TERMINATOR ACTION ALERT - our first item below. leaked documents reveal how the Canadian government has been secretly planning to unleash the hated Terminator sterile-seed technology upon the world. They must be stopped and time is running short. Please act IMMEDIATELY to prevent this catastrophe - a series of simple actions are outlined.

WWF acts to make GM soya ‘sustainable’
Corporate Watch

Not such a cuddly panda – WWF acts to make GM soya ‘sustainable’

The World Wide Fund for Nature (now known as WWF) continues its career as the thinking corporation’s greenwasher with a recent initative designed to extend the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) soya across much of Latin America. Food giants such as Unilever are getting together with soya producers in an upcoming Business Round Table on Sustainable Soy that will be convened by the WWF in Brazil, in March 2005. This round table discussion aims to get farmers, NGOs and corporate groups together to deal with the ongoing soya boom in a way that minimises damage to rainforest and wild habitats. However, minimal damage will still mean a massive amount of destruction, and, what is more, the WWF’s agenda seems to accept that monoculture cash crops, Monsanto’s GM soya, intense pesticide use and land poverty will always be a feature of South American rural society.

GMO Moratorium Goes to Board of Supervisors

Proponents request study of financial impact
of not implementing measure

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 8, 2005

Santa Rosa, California – Today the Sonoma County Registrar of Voters reported to the Board of Supervisors that supporters of the “GE-Free Sonoma County” initiative turned in more than enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot. County Registrar Eeve Lewis reported that the campaign turned in 45,356 signatures, with a validity rate of over 84%. This means that supporters gathered about 38,000 valid signatures, well above the 29,000 required to qualify for a special election.

When supervisors raised questions about possible enforcement costs for the moratorium, GE-Free Campaign Director Dave Henson urged the Board to also study the potentially greater costs of not preventing contamination by GMOs, asking “What will be the public and private cost to Sonoma County Government, farmers and landowners if we do not pass this moratorium?” (full statement follows.)

According to Henson, likely costs include the loss of foreign and domestic markets for both conventional and organic crops, and the costs of environmental clean-up when genetically engineered salmon, lawn grass, fir trees, cows, bacteria, and viruses contaminate the natural environment of Sonoma County.

The Board of Supervisors directed county staff study the impacts of the measure if passed. The results will be reported back to the Board on March 1, at which time the Board is expected to place the measure on the ballot. The vote on the local initiative is likely to be consolidated with a special election called by the Governor, or held on November 8 if no statewide election date is set.

FREE TALK: GE Food and Europe
NWRAGE

The United States is out on a limb when it comes to policy concerning genetic engineering. Unlike the US, Europe has had a five year moratorium on GE crops. Moreover, the people there are very much aware of the issue and actively lobby to keep it out of their kitchens.

This Wednesday the Food for Thought Cafe and NW RAGE will host Antje Lorch, a European scientist opposed to genetically engineered crops. Why not join us on your lunch hour?
