Anti-capitalist call to shut down the Sacramento ministerial
20-04-2003

From the open publishing newswire: Come to Sacramento, CA June 23-25 to shut down the WTO agricultural ministerial!!! - From June 23-25th 2003 the Ministers of Trade, Agriculture and Environment from 180 nations, including all member states of the World Trade Organization (WTO), will meet in Sacramento California at a summit hosted by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), USAID, and the US State Department. This meeting will be a stepping stone to the September WTO Ministerial in Cancun and the Summit of the Americas scheduled for Miami in November. This meeting will be held the same time as an "Expo On Agricultural Science and Technology" which will be showing off the "benefits" of transnational agribusiness and biotechnology.

With this meeting and Expo the United States through WTO is planning on forcing its agricultural agenda on the rest of the world. Agriculture in the most debated issue in the WTO, and for good reason, food affects everyone world wide. Yet both the ministerial meeting and the Expo are not open to the public. The rest of the world has no say. We can not allow these bastards to impose their rules on the rest of the world.

The reasons for shutting down the WTO and putting an end to neoliberalism are far too many to name here. So much suffering around the world has already been caused by neoliberalism, now they are trying to add even more through their agricultural agenda, and their forcing of the biotech menace upon the world. Concerned activists from northern California and around the world will gather in the streets on Sacramento and tell the biotech industry and the WTO to go to hell.

The day after the invasion of Iraq started activists shut down San Francisco. We are calling on individuals and affinity groups to stop the invasion of our food supply with a militant shut down of Sacramento for 3 days.

There will be spokescouncil meetings every night from June 16th, through June 26th. Come with a plan of action and be ready for a capitalist-smashing good time.

Anti-Food Labeling Bill Passes Oregon House
14-04-2003

From the open publishing newswire: HB 2957, a bill that would limit food labeling - including GE foods - in Oregon, passed the House on Friday by a 45-8 margin. The bill will now be sent to a Senate committee for further discussion. It was thought that the bill would be referred to the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, whose Chair, Frank Shields, is highly opposed to the bill. However, its supporters are asking that it be referred to the Business and Labor Committee, which is chaired by Senate Majority Leader David Nelson (R-Pendleton). You can check committee agendas here for an update.

Although HB 2957 seems like a blatant effort to outlaw labeling of Genetically Engineered food, anti-GE activists need not be down and out just yet. Greg Chaimov, state legal counsel, sent out a memo Monday to legislators saying: "HB 2957 proposes a statute, WHICH ANY LATER STATUTE MAY OVERRIDE. Therefore, all any future initiative (or legislative measure for that matter) has to say is 'Notwithstanding HB 2957 . . .' and the initiative or law can impose a labeling requirement." Therefore, according to Rick North of the group GE Free Oregon, even if this becomes law, it can't stop another labeling law such as last year's Measure 27; it isn't even necessary to pass another law rescinding this one first. While this is some good news, anti-GE activists should be alarmed at this attempt by Jeff Kropf (the author of the bill) to take away our rights as consumers to know what's in our food.

In June, the WTO returns to the U.S. for the first time since Seattle
11-04-2003

From the open publishing newswire: JUNE 23-25, SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA

CALL TO ACTION! CALL TO ACTION! CALL TO ACTION!

Sacramento is an important destination on the World Trade Organization's (WTO) pre-Cancun itinerary. The United States Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), USAID, and the US State Department are hosting a summit to which the Ministers of Trade, Agriculture, and Environment from 180 nations have been invited. It will take place in downtown Sacramento from June 23-25, 2003.

An "Expo On Agricultural Science and Technology" will run concurrently to showcase transnational agribusiness and biotechnology corporations and promote an industrialized, hunger inducing, agricultural model. These events are intended to build up to the WTOs September 2003 meetings in Cancun, Mexico. Agriculture is the most contentious issue inside the WTO. Neither the meeting nor the Expo are open to the general public. "This is not a public event", say EXPO organizers. A broad coalition of community organizations from Sacramento and Northern California are organizing a response to these events.

COME TO SACRAMENTO
The resistant spirit of Seattle, D.C., Prague, and Quebec is alive and flows through Sacramento towards Cancun and beyond. The Coalition for Sustainable Agriculture is in the process of planning a response to both the meeting and EXPO. Events in Sacramento will include a "permitted" public demonstration and march, media events, street theatre, public education forums and literature, and non-threatening but disruptive direct actions. Our intent is to non-violently confront the powers that control our food systems with an alternative to their destructive, self-serving vision.[ Read More... ]

AUDIO FILE: The Politics and Safety of Genetically Engineered Foods
08-04-2003

From the open publishing newswire: Marion Nestle, author of the critically acclaimed book "Food Politics," argues that ensuring safe food involves more than washing hands or cooking food to higher temperatures. It involves politics. This was the main theme of her presentation when she appeared at the First Unitarian Church on March 25, 2003. The evening began with about a 10 minute presentation on food politics in Washington D.C., and was followed by a slide show. This audio file is from the first 10 minute presentation. Anti-GE Labeling Bill Update
08-04-2003

From the open publishing newswire: An Oregon bill aimed at limiting food labeling laws, including GE labeling, has been passed by the House Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee in a 6-1 vote. It will now be debated on the floor of the House sometime late this week or early next week.

The bill, HB 2957, which was introduced by Rep. Jeff Kropf (R-Halsey), the Chair of the House Ag & Natural Resources Committee, has been rewritten to be quite ambiguous. The new text of the bill states: "SECTION 1. (1) A local government may not impose a requirement for the disclosure or display of information on a food label. (2) If a food is subject to a federal requirement for disclosing or displaying information on the label, a state agency may not impose a labeling requirement regarding the same information that is more stringent than the federal requirement."

At a public hearing last Thursday, two representatives from NW RAGEand a representative from a newly formed anti-GE group in Portland, GE Free Oregon, spoke out against the bill, while representatives from the Grocery Association and a group called Oregonians for Food and Shelterspoke in favor of the bill. The 7-member House Committee passed the bill in a 6-1 vote. The lone dissenting vote was cast by Rep. Kelley Wirth (D-Corvallis).

shutdown the WTO and tell them no GMOs
01-04-2003

From the open publishing newswire: Calling on all those worried about genetically modified foods, free trade, democracy, farmers rights, world hunger, the environment, and a huge range of other issues to come out to Sacramento on June 23-25, 2003 for the ministerial meeting! http://biodev.org/sacramento/

The conference in Sacramento is more than just a prelude to the WTO meeting in Cancun, it is our chance to bring biotechnology into the national spotlight, and put corporations like Monsanto on the defensive.

This meeting will have government officials, members of the WTO and corporate fatcats all getting together behind closed doors discussing our environment, our food supply and how they will turn our world into their greedy vision.

If you do not have the ability to come to Sacramento or hold a local protest, then tell Monsanto you don't want their GMOs in your diet.http://www.monsanto.com/monsanto/layout/about_us/contactus.asp
