Kwangju and a story of Korean struggle--told by CNN
CNN, 12-09-2003

The Korean farmer who killed himself in protest of the WTO comes from a long line of people engaged in struggle. I did a little search and came up with this article. Kwangju was a turning point in Korean history. Hopefully someone will fill us in on what happened next. 2,000 people gunned down in the streets and at 4 in the morning. History is there to LEARN from...

Korean Farmer & Advocate Takes his Own Life
Andrew Kennis, 11-09-2003

Lee Kyung-hae used a Swiss army knife to stab himself in the chest. His death came during an attempted life-saving surgery at Cancun’s General Hospital. He was 56 years old. Mr. Lee had a humble background, as he came from a family who suffered through rural poverty. After having struggled as a poor farmer for many years, Mr. Lee became involved in activism as an advocate for farmers and eventually became the president of the Korean Advanced Farmers Federation. In his own words, Mr. Lee described the WTO as a source of "waves that destroyed our lovely rural communities." article by Mr. Lee, describing his own personal experiences and reasons for opposition to the WTO, can be exclusively found right here!]

WTO Kills Farmers
think global, 11-09-2003

Gerard Greenfield reports from Via Campesina
Danielle, 09-09-2003

Gerard Greenfield went to a meeting of the Via Campesina, (the International Farmers forum) today. About 3000 farmers attended this meeting from indigenous communities from around the world. Gerard describes how the main issue of the meeting today is very much about food sovereignty and free trade. What was very interesting was that there were people from small farming communities from around the world, including South Africa and Thailand. Gerard says "The common theme that is coming out here that is very strong, in statements that are repeated throughout the meetings, especially from the campesina from the indigenous communities whose livelihoods are threatened, is the position: WTO out of agriculture, no patents on life, and yes on food sovereignty."

GM Food and Crops: What Next?
steve, 08-09-2003

This briefing is an update on what has been happening on genetically modified (GM) food and crops and what is coming up in the near future. This autumn will see a number of key dates, including a report on the Government's public debate, GM Nation, a report on the Farm Scale Evaluations and the next steps in the GM Trade War between the US and Europe.

The decisions made over the next few months could have widespread repercussions for our food, farming and environment. Chief amongst these will whether the Government will allow GM crops to be commercially grown in the UK. If they do, the first could be grown as early as spring 2004.
