Early and Persistent Reports of Police Harassment

Police Harrassment- Profiling

Today at 12:45AM while walking from on 13th street, two motorcycle pigs...sorry, Police, pulled over to ask me if they could talk for a few minutes...inviting me into the street. After telling the two gentlemen, "sorry guys, I have somewhere to be" and walking away, one says "ok...We see how it is" and they both ride away.

Police Harass WTO protesters

Apparently the police do not consider themselves to be the only suspicious, militant looking force lurking the streets of Sacramento. When activists were given citations for jaywalking Thursday the 19th, two things became apparent. First of all, freedom of speech means nothing if dissenters are intimidated into silence. Second of all, the police obviously consider this movement threatening. Those impacted do not know whether to be angry or flattered.

GE Trees protest kicks off weekend
Jennifer, 21-06-2003

The demonstration began with a rally outside of the IP facility in an industrial area of Sacramento. People with banners proclaiming, "Save our forests, no genetically engineered trees" and "GE Trees? No Way!" chanted "Stop, stop, stop IP, we don't want your GE Trees!" One large banner exclaimed, "End Corporate Dominance Over Ecosystems and Communities." The police kept a fairly low profile; although there were two marked cop cars nearby and several unmarked vehicles around, they only communicated with us to tell us to move from the middle of the road onto the sidewalk, and later to tell us to move from the parking lot.

Pharming: Scant Regulation of GMOs In U.S. Crops
Claire Hope Cummings, 21-06-2003

New genetically modified organisms are on the loose and they are causing trouble. These are experimental crops that contain pharmaceutical proteins, industrial chemicals, even human genes. They are being grown outdoors in hundreds of secret locations all over the country, in open-pollinated plants such as corn. This powerful new use of biotechnology is called "pharming," and it poses very real threats to our personal and environmental health. Cases of pharm contamination have already occurred, raising new criticisms of the regulatory system in the United States.

Permaculture seedballs seized by Sacramento police in dawn raid
21-06-2003

SACRAMENTO--This morning at around 7:00 a.m., Sacramento police officers paid a visit to the WTO mobiization Welcome Center and seized over 100 permaculture seed-balls. The police claimed that the seedballs were illegal under statute 12.48.090, which is "Possession of prohibited weapons during a parade or demonstration". The fact that the seedballs were sitting idly at the edge of the parking lot, drying in the sun, rather than being part of a "parade or demonstration" was an irrelevant distinction to the police.
